SAGUNTO

If there’s a city where you can journey through various eras, it’s Sagunto. The town bears traces of the Iberians, Romans, Muslims, and other cultures throughout history. Spaces related to Jews, diverse architectural styles, and a robust industrial heritage are all preserved.

Remnants of Iberian walls from the settlement of Arse, located at the western end of the current castle, provide archaeological evidence from that era. In Grau Vell, there are remains of the ancient port used by both Iberians and Romans. Here, you can explore a fortified complex by the sea and begin a journey through the “Marjal dels Moros” while observing birds.

SAGUNTO HERITAGE

The Roman presence is a crucial chapter in Sagunto’s history. The siege of Sagunto triggered the Second Punic War between Carthaginians and Romans. Remains of the ancient circus and of a a Roman bridge, the majestic Via del Pòrtic (a branch of the Via Augusta passing through the city) and the magnificent Theater on the hillside of the Castle, unique in the Valencian Community, still showcase its excellent acoustic condition, serving as a cultural and festive events venue At the summit, surrounded by the castle walls, lies the Roman forum and the Epigraphic Antiquarium. In the lower part of the city, houses like the “Domus dels Peixos” bear witness to the importance of ancient Saguntum.

From the medieval period, the most visible heritage is the current configuration of the Castle, converted into a fortress by the Muslims. After the Christian conquest, the construction of the Church El Salvador and later, that of Santa María, exemplifies a remarkable blend of Gothic and Baroque architecture.

In the center of the Christian old town Gothic palaces were built while the Jewish Quarter, with its irregular street layout that still preserves its original traces, was situated in the upper part of the city. The significant role of this Jewish quarter is evidenced through its walls and streets, a Jewish cemetery, and a mikveh.

The Sagunto’s Industrial heritage is noteworthy; Puerto de Sagunto is considered an example of a Factory Town, particularly linked to the Blast Furnaces. The Blast Furnace No. 2 still stands in Puerto de Sagunto, alongside the management district or the forbidden city, previously accessible only to the steel industry managers and their families. Now transformed into a green space where you can stroll and reminisce about not-so-distant times. If you want to learn more, visit the recently inaugurated Interpretation Center of the Ojos Negros Greenway (Spain’s longest greenway), showcasing the origin of the ore, the birth of an industry, and an urban center. All within a natural environment and a coast with diverse beaches.

Time travel is a reality in this city surrounded by countless stories that also envelop us in the form of Urban Art, waiting for you in any corner where you’ll capture that special photo.
