UTIEL

Labyrinth of Passions

UTIEL

Utiel is renowned for its prominent role in wine production, and a significant part of its heritage is linked to this aspect. The city boasts hundreds of underground wineries scattered throughout, especially in the historic center.
Some of these facilities are open to visitors, allowing them to explore every detail of the wine production process in these premises. In this region, wineries have a distinctive feature, employing gigantic clay jars where wine was fermented and stored until it reached the market.

UTIEL AND WINE TOURISM

These wineries form a veritable underground city. It is said that anyone who wanted to build a house would excavate the land. The emptied space became the cellar, and the material excavated was used for constructing the house.
Wineries can be found throughout the historic center, including beneath the current City Hall building.
In this way, Utiel becomes a city that blends the hustle and bustle of a modern and prosperous city with the pride of a past that translates into interesting spaces of great cultural value. Notable landmarks include the Church of the Assumption, the late medieval defensive system – castle and walls – as well as a succession of heraldic shields identifying the owners of various buildings.
A visit to Utiel should include a trip to the renowned Bodega Redonda, home to the Regulatory Council of the Utiel-Requena Designation of Origin and the Wine Museum of the Comunitat Valenciana. This original building from 1891, designed by an engineer and disciple of Gustave Eiffel, stands out with its unique architecture based on noble materials.

Three new underground spaces have been added to Utiel’s offerings: two wineries in Puerta del Sol and an air-raid shelter.
