A Heritage Gem Just a Step from the Coast

XÁTIVA

Just a short half-hour drive from the Mediterranean coast, inland in the province of Valencia, you’ll discover the fascinating and historic city of Xàtiva, the largest heritage ensemble in this region. From the earliest prehistoric settlements at the Neolithic site of Cova Negra, through the Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Muslims, to the Catalan and Aragonese reconquerors, every civilization has left its mark on a city unique for its immense historical and artistic heritage.

Xàtiva is declared an Artistic Historical Ensemble

Xàtiva is declared an Artistic Historical Ensemble, boasting 7 national monuments (castle, collegiate church, hospital, churches of Sant Feliu and Sant Francesc, Sant Domènec convent, and Almodí museum), along with numerous buildings designated as cultural heritage. The castle and the artistic historical ensemble of Xàtiva have been chosen as one of the 7 Valencian wonders. Here, the two Spanish popes, Calixto III and Alexander VI (key figures and initiators of the rise to power of the Borgia family), were born, as well as the painter José de Ribera, the Spanish. The rich cultural legacy of Xàtiva can be explored through various activities. A Borja Interpretation Center has just opened in the chapel of the Royal Hospital, which makes known the city’s connection with the most influential Valencian family in history.

The rich cultural legacy of Xàtiva can be explored through various activities. For example, the Borja route, which explores various monumental places linked to the most relevant Valencian saga in history, or the Crema de Xàtiva route, where visitors can better understand how the War of Succession affected the city and why the portrait of King Felipe V hangs upside down in the Fine Arts Museum of the Casa de la Enseñanza.

The water route highlights Xàtiva’s impressive collection of monumental fountains, earning it the nickname “City of a Thousand Fountains,” as well as the main architectural vestiges of water engineering from the Muslim era and other related heritage elements.

The city’s main culinary specialties are “arroz al horno,” a star dish of the local gastronomy, and typical Xàtiva Arab sweets, such as “arnadí” and “monxavena.” Additionally, Xàtiva offers an interesting cultural program in its museums, theaters, concerts, exhibitions, or music festivals like “Nits al Castell,” held every Saturday in July.
