LORCA

THE MOST ASTONISHING EMBROIDERIES OF HOLY WEEK

LORCA

Lorca is the second-largest municipality in Spain, and for two centuries, it served as a meeting point and a border between the kingdom of Castile and the Nasrid kingdom of Granada. From that time, the imposing castle that dominates the entire Guadalentín valley remains as a testimony, inhabited by humans since the Bronze Age. Lorca is cultural heritage and nature, offering a range of possibilities to discover surprising spaces.

However, if Lorca has a hallmark that involves the entire population, it is its spectacular Holy Week, characterized by the celebration of the Bíblico Procesionales Parades. Throughout this week of religious festivity, devotion, art, and culture come together, making it an event of International Tourist Interest.

Massive participation is one of the hallmarks of this Holy Week, but the embroideries displayed, i ncluding those on the trappings of the horses, also attract attention. The embroideries can be seen throughout the year thanks to the embroidery museums that each of the steps (Blanco, Azul, Encarnado, and Morado) participating in the processions has. In this way, it is possible to experience Holy Week throughout the entire year.

From Good Friday to Easter Sunday, four processions are celebrated: Good Friday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday, in addition to other traditional religious processions, including those on Passion Saturday, Maundy Thursday, and Easter Sunday.

Speaking of history, a prominent figure indissolubly linked to the city is Alfonso X the Wise. As an Infante of Castile, he received from his father, King Fernando II, the mission to conquer the Kingdom of Murcia and three independent cities, including Lorca. The future Alfonso X signed the capitulation of Lorca in June 1244, and since then, the city became an important stronghold for Castile as a border point with the Kingdom of Granada.

Alfonso X had the homage tower of the Castle built, whose image is featured in the city’s coat of arms.

Throughout 2021, the city of Lorca commemorated the 800th anniversary of the birth of the Wise King with a wide range of activities, including conferences, exhibitions, leisure events, and various cultural initiatives.

Alfonso X, the Wise, is a historical figure forever linked to the city of Lorca, which he incorporated into the Kingdom of Castile.
