CEHEGÍN

A wonder built by history, nature and tradition

CEHEGÍN

Cehegín is a city with a remarkable cultural and monumental heritage, featuring UNESCO-listed cave paintings and an old town designated as an Artistic Historic Ensemble since 1982. Cehegín boasts true monuments gifted by nature and a rich gastronomic tradition.

For all these reasons, Cehegín was chosen as the First Rural Wonder of Spain in 2019, an honor awarded by the users of the Home Away platform, specializing in holiday rentals, especially in rural areas. It is recognition of the reality of Cehegín.

When it comes to cultural and monumental heritage, we cannot forget that among the narrow streets of its old town, you will find over a hundred coats of arms adorning houses and palaces (the Jaspe Palace houses the Town Hall); you won’t help but admire the arcades of Castle Square and visit the nearby site of the primitive Begastri, where Iberians, Romans, and Visigoths left their mark.

Remnants of the ancient Almohad walls are scattered, but a clear example is the so-called Caravaca Gate. Cehegín has notable examples of religious architecture, such as the Convent of San Esteban or the Parish Church of Santa María Magdalena, in Renaissance style.

Regarding palaces, besides the aforementioned Jaspe Palace, noteworthy are the Casa de doña Blanca, the Casa de don Octavio, or the former Casa del Concejo.

Yet, the sensitivity towards the preservation of its historical heritage is not the only merit of Cehegín, which boasts a rich gastronomy, a reference for the entire Region of Murcia. Among its dishes, michirones, empedrao, or migas with tajá stand out. This culinary tradition needs care and enhancement, which led to the creation of the Tapas and Cocktail Route, now in its twelfth edition.

Another treasure of Cehegín is its nature. Characterized by the abundance of mountains, within the municipal term, sometimes shared with other municipalities, you’ll find two protected areas: the Sierras de Burete, Lavia y Cambrón, and the Sierra del Molino, Embalse del Quípar, and Llanos del Cagitán, designated Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA), while the Quípar River is declared a Site of Community Interest (SCI).

Moreover, Cehegín is crossed by the so-called Northwest Greenway, following the route of the former Caravaca-Murcia railway, allowing you to enjoy an attractive natural environment with a rich history.

The Tapas and Cocktail Route, aiming to enhance Cehegín’s rich gastronomic tradition, is now in its twelfth edition.
